One of our women clergy in Chichester diocese did a funeral recently, and had this email back afterwards:
Thanks again for the service, although difficult for me at times. His sisters thought ‘ we done Bill proud ‘ and without doubt proves to me, we should have more women in the church because you have completely put me at ease . (emphasis added by me)
Now, not all funerals led by male priests are inadequate; and not all ones led by women – because of their gender alone – are brilliant, but this is just a reminder of the way the distinctive ministry of women in our diocese is valued.
